Daring the coursa of his conversation with the Secretary this afternoon,
Ambessador Bonnet mentioned da lew York Timea story by Jases Reston that aseret
militury talks on Southesst Asia were at prement taking place. Ambazaedor
Bonnet asid that be anticipated that he vould receive a query froa the French
Government about this nowspager story and asiced if the Secretary could givo hia
any enlightenmont.
The Secretary replied that he had not seen the story and know of no such
conversations, He said that while it was alwaya possible that military officials
might have had some exchange of views, be had beard nothing about any ques on
versations.
Anbessador lonnet exprossed rolief and said he vas very resssured, aince ha
presumed that 15 any importent talks vere going on between the United States and
United Kingdom on Southesst Asia, the Secretary would have some knowledge of them.
Be added that in vãov of the Indechina situation France, naturally, had a vital
interest in military conversations regarding Southesat Asia.
The Secretary said he understood the eltuation in Indochina wes far from
reassuring at the present time and that there were indications that Chinese
*volunteers along the lines of Chinese *volunteers* in Korea vere nov particl-
pating in the hostilities in Indochina. Ambassador Hoanet said he believed there
were some indications that some Chinase vere An Indechins, but not on any sub-
stantial sosle. lle added that the Freneh vere sending substantial roinforgementa
to General de Lattre asounting to about 30,000 additional Frenen troops. This,
be felt, vould be very helpful in stabilizing the situation there unless there
was massive Chineze intervention, vhich would areste a most serious situation.
