CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION FROM TEXAS
The Delegation probably will wish to discuss the defense of
Western Europe and policy with respect to Korea and China. They
may express interest in the importation of Mexican labor.
Last year the Delegation was interested in the oil-import
question. There has been little discussion of this matter during
the present Congress but Representative Gossett may refer to ite
The oil industry is currently enjoying its most prosperous year
and, therefore, the import question is somewhat less acute. The
problem of revising the Venezuelan Agreement in regard to oil has
been discussed with Speaker Rayburn but with no other member of
the Delegation as yet.
Senator Johnson is Chairman of the Armed Services Preparedness
Subcommittee, and has been making studies of critical commodities
such as tin, rubber and nickel. Representative Burleson is a
member of the Foreign Affairs Committee; Representatives Mahon
and Thomas are on the Appropriations Committee and Representative
Combs is on the Ways and Means Committee.
Representative Poage attended the recent negotiations in Mexico
City on the future availability of Mexican workers. He attended the
Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting in Dublin last year and traveled
elsewhere in Europe and the Near East. He is understood to be still
irritated concerning failure to provide Air Force transportation for
him from Teheran. The Under Secretary sent a cable to him at the
time expressing regret concerning the difficulties he had encountered.
The Congressman is pressing for enactment of legislation introduced
by him to enlist foreign nationals, including Germans and Japanese,
into the U.S. Armed Forces.
Representative Rogers was elected to the present Congress,
replacing Representative Guill (Republican).
A list of the Delegation is attached.
