Item 1. Julius Klein

SERVICE:
I discussed with the President his note to me of June 13.
relating to the travel of Mr. Julius Klein of Chicago in
was looking into Mr. Klein's military status. I explained
Europe. I explained that the Department of the Army
the reason why Mr. Klein had a letter from Mr. Wilson
Compton and further explained that Mr. Klein was traveling
at his own expense as a private citizen and was merely taking
advantage of his presence in Europe to have a personal look
at the operations of our information service. I said that I
thought Mr. Klein was now on his way back to this country.
Subject to my confirming this last piece of information, the
President said that we could well let the matter drop.
