HARVARD UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF GOVERNMENT LITTAUER CENTER M-22 CAMBRIDGE 38, MASSACHUSETTS June 10, 1953 Mr. Dean G. Acheson Union Trust Building Washington, D. C. Dear Dean: I wish to report that because of heavy summer commitments already taken on, both Max Millikan and Merle Fainsod are unable to take part in our seminar. Both of them are greatly disappointed, and both would be able to come for one or two sessions if it seemed desirable to bring them in ad hoc. If these two absences leave a real gap--which may not be the case, since I gather we seem to have had good luck with most of the others--you may want to consider asking Professor Arthur MacMahon of Columbia. I think extremely highly of his judgment, and he has a close knowledge of the State Department and American foreign affairs. He spends the summer at Croton and might well be persuaded to come down to Princeton once a week. I have also talked to Archie, who says that July is con- secrated to poetry, but that in August he expects to be work- ing on a mere course of lectures, and would very much like to come down if we still want him then. I know better than to try to get him away from his poetry, and I have told him that you will let him know in late July if you still want him. thon Even though they can't shake themselves loose this summer, all three of the people I have talked with think this seminar is a really valuable undertaking, so that I am delighted that we are getting started, and I look forward to the meeting on July 2.
