that with the estimates that the intelligence fellows had gotten up. (I think there were?)
rather more planes than the intelligence fellows had estimated. Then you (think that would
make 15) to see them and analyze the metallurgy of the darned thing, and the serial numbers,
and so on, and see what their production is. I think you would probably find they are doing
somewhat better than the intelligence fellows estimate. (From time to time?) when you do
get a piece of hard fact, it seemed to confirm the intelligence boys against the fellows
who were operating just by general impressions. So we gradually came to the conclusion
that we would accept what the intelligence fellows did, unless we felt, for some overpowering
reasons for deviating from it, or ignoring it. This was as good as any other source of
information we could find.
Q. (I wish to corroborate that, I agree with that?) the general impression in academic
circles, that there is a powerful adverse selection, working against the Government, in the
Intelligence, is that right? That the people who weren 't quite good enough to make the
in
grade in the academic professions main line jobs, / these fields, tend
to gravitate to Government intelligence work. That has been - -(Lawrence, Fisher, Gerstadt
and Clay?) don't prove much, but I could just think and name off 10 or 15 or 20 people
who (just can't position to be very true?) $ so it may be that this is a fair accusation,
which I don't know whether it is, it may be that the Government isn't getting the quality
in Intelligence work that it could get if it
to become personnel, in that kind
of..
DA QX Well, I think that is generally the true, You have a lot of trouble getting different
and intelligence for
kind of personnel. I would rather have a good job in academic circles, than work in research/
the Government,
I think almost anybody would.
Q. There is a pruning out, an
,
of people who didn't quite make it, into this
kind of Government job.
DA. But you might say that about the Army, Navy, or Air Force, too.
Q. You might say about
population. That they were the fellows who couldn't get
a managing editorship of this, that or the other.
Q. Or you might say it about 90 per cent of the people in the school of (colliers?)
