Earl James McOrath *
U. S. Commissioner of Education
Federal Security Agency
It is a privilege to have this opportunity to present some of
my views to the American Vocational Association. It is a source of deep
regret that I cannot be present in person because I have long looked forward
t
to the pleasure of meeting with the members of this group. Unfortunately,
because of an urgent trip to Europe to examine certain aspects of the
educational programs of several countries, I have had to deny myself the
privilege and the pleasure of attending your meeting. I shall, however,
look forward to being with you on another occasion.
In the meantime I want to say that my contacts with the persons
interested in vocational educstion during the past nine months have been
pleasent and profitable. This is especially true of ay associations with
Mr. Dennis and with the Directors of Vocational Education in various States.
1 am conscious of the problems which they face and which indeed we all face
together in advancing the intesests of vocational education throughout
this country. I pledge you my full support and assistance in this great
effort. I want to take this opportunity, too, to commend my colleague
and friend, Dr. Ragmond Gregory, who in my opinion is an educational
statesman. He has vision which sees over and beyond the overyday problems
which we all face. He sees clearly the great part which vocational eduça-
tion does and should play in our total educational system and in the
prosperity of our people. It is a pleasure to be associated with him in
this important work.
