Spiraling costs also have hit our schools very seriously.
In fact 1951-year dollars purchased only about one-half as nuch
school building construction as could have been bought with 1945-
year dollars. For example, one million dollars spent for school
building construction during the past year purchased only about as
nuch school plant as $568,000 could have bought at the end of
World War II or as much as $446,000 could have purchased in 1940
before U. S. entry into World War II.
MBy Earl James McGrath, U. S. Commissioner of Education, Federal
Security Agency, Washington, D. C., on "School Construction Costs,"
to New York Times, January 1952.
