WASHINGTON
February 9, 1946
Dear Mary:
I appreciated very much your letter of the sixth
and was glad to hear from you.
Of course, that is a nice invitation from Mrs.
Gray but, if I were you, right at the present
time, I don't believe I would accept it. They
are hunting around now for places to throw bricks
at me and I certainly don't want any of the family
to suffer from any of those bricks. So far the
whole family has been exceedingly lucky in not
having been attacked directly.
I am very much afraid that if any of you get
mixed up in the political situation outside of
Jackson County., Missouri you will immediately
begin to be the recipients of dirty cracks by
the gossip columnists and all the other people
who are anxious to see the President discredited.
I am only advising you because you can do what-
ever you like in the matter. When I get a chance
to see you I'll tell you just exactly what the
situation really is.

Democrats have started outon
