During the past 24 hours the principal issue has been the
lifting of martial law in Pusan. In accordance with its legal
right the National Assembly has, by overwhelming majority,
requested the lifting of martial law in Pusan and the request
has been approved by the Korean Cabinet. UNCURK, American
Embassy and General Van Fleet have also recommended the lifting
of martial law. The Department has strongly supported this
position in telegrams to the Embassy, details of which are given
below. Many Korean officials have appealed to the Embassy for
action by the UN and the US and have also been seeking protec-

UNCURK
UNCURK has presented to Rhee and made public a strong
