SUMMARY OF TELEGRAMS
GERMANY
We have informed the other five governments represented
at the recent London discussions on Germany of our accept-
ance of the recommendations contained in the final report. Public
announcement of this will be made following the release this morning
of the final communique of the London Conference. The British Govern-
ment has also agreed to accept the conference report and will probably
likewise announce this today.
FRANCE
Qualified observers in Paris agree that the next ten days
will be the most crucial the Schuman Government has yet
faced, with the fate of the government turning on the religious school
problem and the German question. There is more optimism at present
concerning the Socialist position on the German question, but this
optimism is tempered by the knowledge that General de Gaulle plans to
make a strong statement against the government's German policy in the
middle of the week, which may largely influence the attitude of rightist
groups.
USSR
Belgian Prime Minister Spaak has expressed to Ambassador
Kirk his satisfaction with the apparent results of our
present policy toward the USSR. He believes that a. firm line must be
maintained by the five Brussels pact countries and the US despite obvious
Soviet maneuvers to play down the seriousness of the situation. Spaak
expressed the view that Molotov is already retreating in the face of
western resistance but will quickly resume aggressive tactics if we dis-
play any softness.
PALESTINE
Minister Childs in Jidda reports that the Arab and Jewish
acceptance of the Security Council truce resolution and the
consequent lessening of fears that the US would take unilateral action
to lift the arms embargo have notably diminished tension in the Middle
East and removed for the time being the possibility of an Arab League
decision favoring a break in relations with the US.
