MR. APR HOPKINS & 1952
April 4, 1952
MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
Subject: Press Statement on Leonardo da Vinei Arniversary
I am sending you herevith a draft text of a press statement
on the subject of the observance of the 500th anniversary of the
birth of Leonardo da Vinei which it is recommended that you issue
publicly.
The Department received from the Italian Embassy an inquiry
to ascertain whether it would be possible to accept the suggestion
of the Italian Government that the 15th of April, birth date of
Leonardo da Vinci, be proclained as Leonardo da Vinci Day.
W. e, x1125
This request by the Italian Government coincides with a
#
current project by the Department to develop an elaborate exhibit
for Italy illustrating Italian contributions to civilization and
culture in Americanand the world. A principal theme in this
exhibit will be the accomplishments of da Vinei whose 500th
anniversary in 1952 provided a convenient point of departure for
the entire exhibit. Official American recognition of da Vinel's
anniversary would facilitate the success of the exhibit.
