r/x 121 September 10, 1945 Mr. Dillon S. Myer, Director Wer Relocation Authority x6-K Barr Building TRUMAN Washington, D. 0. Kimmi NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS SERVICE Dear Mr. Ayor: c COVERNAE x Severni weeks ago, Mr. Robert St. John, noted radio comientator, who broadgasts over the NBC notwork x136- at 10:00 A.M. each morning, devoted several brosdcasts to the Fort Ontario Emergeney Refugee Shelter. He urged miscel. his listeners to express their ideas as to what America should do with these refugees and received a total of 523 responses. Mr. St. John has given us the privilege of examining these letters, and the following anslysis results: 79, were in favor of giving the refugees frege dom and opportunity to remain permanently in the United States if they desire; 17% were opposed; and 4% were uncertain. It is interesting to note that few of the letters were from New York City or adjacent areas. A considerable number were from New England, while listeners from the North Central, Mid-liestern and Southern States provided a considerable dajority of favorable pesponses. Many of the replies were from rural areas, and I believe every state, except Ideho and Oregon were represented. Strangely enough, very few of the letters were from people with names usually considered foreign or Jowish. This may have, no signi- ficance other then indicating the type of audience which is reached by Mr. St. John's program.
