Dr. John R. Steelman, Acting Director of Defense Mobilization,
announced today the cessation of the current negotiations for the
settlment of issues between the steel industry and union.
He dismissed the negotiators of both sides this afternoon, after
Dr. Feinsinger, who has been conducting the recent discussions, reported
to him that further negotiations, at this time, would not be productive.
Dr. Steelman stated that he will so report to the President.
"I greatly regret that the latest negotiations have not led to a
contract between the two parties," Dr. Steelman said. "It had been the
President's hope that an agreement would be quickly reached so that the
steel plants might be returned at the earliest possible moment to the
companies.
He said also that he stood ready to convene a new meeting of
representatives of both sides at any time that either side indicated
a belief that a resumption of negotiations would prove fruitful.
Meantime, he said, the Government would continue to press for a mutually
satisfactory settlement.
