Honorable Harry S. Truman
President of United States
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. President:
On June 19, 1952, I wired you as follows:
"Approximately six weeks ago you siezed the steel industry on the grounds that
lack of steel would immediately threaten our security and economy. By what
inconsistent reasoning are you now permitting the steel strike to exist when
you have the Taft-Hartley Act at your disposal?
As one who helped vote you to office four years ago, I insist upon an immediate
and comprehensive reply."
Apparently your inconsistencies are exceeded only by your breech of etiquette.
In my wire I asked for an immediate and comprehensive reply. In the newspapers
I have noted your being quoted as saying the Taft-Hartley Act provides no solution
to the current steel crisis. Surely you recognize this as an inadequate state-
ment. In the meantime our business in Gary, Indiana, as are thousands of other
businesses, is suffering severe financial losses.
Should you fail to respond to this letter, as you have my wire, I can only assume
that you have no good reason for failing to invoke the Taft-Hartley Act, with the
exception that you are fearful that 95% or more of the steel workers in these
United States would be willing to accept any one of several of the generous
offers made by the steel industry. I shall impatiently await your reply.
Yours very truly,
LOU EHLERS, INC.
L. W. Ehlers
