RESOLUTION
To President Harry S. Truman:
Whereas the inquiry held by the House of Representatives'
Committee on Un-American Activities into alleged communism in
Hollywood, is a threat to the basic principles of democracy, inas-
much as the accused are deprived of their fundamental right to
defend themselves and to cross-examine their accusers; and
Whereas in such proceedings of said committee the accused
are exposed to public censure regardless of whether or not the
charges are proved; and
Whereas such investigations heretofor undertaken by the
aforesaid committee are the work properly belonging within the scope
of the F.B.I.; and
Whereas there is danger that the precedent heretofor
established by said committee may be carried over into other aspects
of American life, creating grave danger to civil liberties;
It is therefore unanimously resolved by the Passaic
Section of the National Council of Jewish Women that the kind of
investigation conducted by the House Committee on Un-American
Activities does not properly fall within the scope of a Congression-
al Committee, and in order to prevent further inroads into the civil
liberties of the American people, we urge that these hearings be
ended and not resumed.
