OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT
BY
Grace. CC Nash
Dear Mr. President:
On December 4th, back in 1941, my husband and I
were sitting with friends in the Palm Garden of the Manila
Hotel. It was one of those lush tropical nights.
"What a swell time for a surprise bombing!" said one
of our group. We looked up at the full white moon.
"Don't be foolish!" said theNaval officer sitting next
to mea "The Japs couldn't get near the Philippines. We could
finish off their Navy over the week end!"
We settled back, smug in our ignorance. Our Uncle Sam

wouldn't be caught napping.
GOVERNMENT
No, Sir. He was caught sound asleep! And we, a family
of four, later five, (our third son was born a prisoner) were
victims of our nation's unpreparedness. So were thousands of
others, Mr. President!
