MUTUALL INSURANCE f 11/21/45- PHOENIX COMPANY ORGANIZED 1851 PHOENIX MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT FROM THE OFFICE OF ARTHUR M. COLLENS, PRESIDENT bridgeport 3, CONN. - TED PHILLIPS 900 LIBERTY BLDG., 945 MAIN STREET telephones: OFFICE 3-3141 HOME 7-0633 October 23, 1945. P.P.F. Mr. Harry S. Truman, President White House Washington, D. C. Honorable Sir: Ever since you took the oath of office as President of our country, (in my estimation, the most privileged under God of all countries), and prayed for Divine Guidance, I have also prayed that He would give you Light on the many perplexing questions of our day. One of them is how to stem the tide of intemperance which is making headway in our nation. I will not burden you with statistics, etc., as you have access to all of them except the broken families, broken hearts, the aftermath. In a number of articles, mention has been made of your moderate drinking, and in the last issue of Life Magazine, mentioned about drinking Bourbon. It is not my intention of criticizing your personal habits but I would like to have you give serious consideration to the example which you are setting for our splendid young people who are to take positions of responsibility in the years ahead. Will you go along with the Apostle Paul, found in 1 Cor: 6:12 "All things are lawful unto me but all things are not expedient." Sincerely, STRUMAN Di T. T.
