Dear Mr. President:
I have recently spoken to the Savannah
River Baptist Association, representing 42 churches with a
membership of more than 7,000. In my discourse I used a par-
allelism, comparing this present day, with that of Israelites
when Joshua was commanded to take them across the Jordan R1-
ver.I compared the late President Rosevelt to Moses and the
present President to Joshua, who succeeded Moses, whose duty
it was to cross the River and settle the people and discribe
their boundries, ects. Read Joshua I:1-18;3:1-7.
But if the rumors that comes to me through
the press are true,I am mortified for having used such a par-
allelism. And I am frank to say, that unless we have some clair-
ification or explanation,I shall ever refrain from using or
making any reference on any such an occasion.
As I listened to your inauguration and your
prayers which followed, I cannot conceive of these divergent
views with regard to temperence and morality. Surely the ex-
periences through which we have passed, have been enough to
forever turn us away from indulgences which make for wick-
edness and war We shall be happy if you can, and will clair-
ify your position on these reports.
Cordially,
H.D.Gober
