1 March 19, 1951.
Dear Mrs. Stultz:
The President of the United States has asked me
to respond to your letter of March 8, 1951, in which you
enquire as to the value of a document dated February 1,
1865, signed by George A. Poteet, Lieutenant Colonel of the
115th Regiment of Illinois Infantry Volunteers, and Wood W.
Peddecord, Regimental Adjutant, announcing the designation
of a Sergeant.
On the basis of your description, I am reluctantly
obliged to suppose that it is a formal notice of a character
too conventional and too common to possess instrinsic interest
beyond the interest of family association. In that event, it
is unlikely to enlist the attention of antiquarians or col-
lectors of autographs. At the same time, it is entirely
possible that it may be of some significance to the military
records of the State. With this in mind, permit me to suggest
that you send a transcript of it to Dr. Harry E. Pratt, State
Historian of Illinois, at Springfield, who is in position to
give you authoritative counsel and opinion.
With best wishes,
Sincerely yours,
Luther H. Evans x/60
