Hallmark Cards HALLMARK GARDS INGORPORATED KANSAS GITY, MISSOURI 64141 Thuman 20, 1970 WEBSTER SCHOTT EDITORIAL DIRECTOR NATIONALLO HIVES U. S. Dear Mr. Truman: With this note is a facsimile copy of a small book we hope to publish at the end of this year. It¹s called "A Man From Missouri: Harry S. Truman. 11 Our Permissions Editor has written and talked to Miss Conway about this book. I have too. We've been seeking permission to use in "A Man From Missouri" brief excerpts from your memoirs, a book called "Truman Speaks" and "Mr. Citizen. 11 Those excerpts are on pages 15, 16, 23-25, 58, 59, 60, and 61 of this dummy manuscript. Miss Conway has told us there is some doubt that you would permit us to use the excerpts since you are opposed to having your writing taken out of context. I believe you'11 see that we¹ve tried to create the proper setting for these excerpts in our book. The purpose of writing to you now is to again seek permission to use these excerpts. Another purpose in writing to you is to make certain that you are not opposed to the general idea of this book. If you are unable to grant us permission to use the copyrighted material mentioned above, it's been our intention to replace it with material from the public domain. However, if our doing this book is likely to offend you, we will cancel the whole project. We would very much appreciate your indicating in a brief note -- or with a line at the bottom of this letter -- whether you will grant us permission to use the material mentioned and whether our doing "The Man From Missouri" is all right with you. Sincerely, within smok The Honorable Harry S Truman The Harry S Truman Library Independence, Missouri 64050
