My dear Mr. Delano:
I appreciated very much your letter of the twenty-second
regarding the building in Paris, which is one that can
possibly be used as American Embassy headquarters. I'll
have it looked into and see what can be done about it.
1 also have a copy of the letter addressed to Mr. Orr in
regard to the refurnishing of the White House. I want it dis- -
tinctly understood that this matter will be closely watched
by me and that there is going to be no special privileged
people allowed to decide what will be done with the refurnish-
ing of the White House. I've already discussed that matter
with Mr. Orr and Mr. Dougherty, and also Mr. Finley, and
when the matter is to be decided I shall expect to be consulted.
I am very much interested in the proper replacement of the
furniture in the White House in the manner in which it should
be placed and, since I am the only President in fifty years who
has had any interest whatever in the rehabilitation of the White
House, I am going to see that it is done properly and correctly.
I don't know who B. Altman and Company are but I do know
something about the proper arrangement in interior decoration,
particularly as it affects the White House and I am going to see
that it is done in the proper manner.
The next time you are in Washington I'll be glad to talk with
you on the subject.
Sincerely yours,
33.
