MR. PRESIDENT or TOASTMASTER:
I an highly gratified to be a guest
of this organization. It is a pleasure to be
here at the same table with the President of
the American Bankers Association and the Pres-
ident of one of our great Southwestern Rail-
roads. I an anxious, as a public servant, to
have the point of view of these well informed
gentlemen on public affairs, especially as
Government and Governmental activities affect
business; particularly as to the effect of
Governmental activities on the banking and
railroad business.
My good friends in Kansas City,
T. Kemper and K. F. Swinney, suggested to
me when I went to Washington in January, 1935,
that I would do well to get acquainted with
Mr. Fleming. Well, I went up to his bank to
see him, and as those of you who are familiar
with Tashington know, his bank is right across
