Mr. Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, it is always a
pleasure to come to the Pacific Northwest. On this visit it is
particularly so, because I am afforded an opportunity to tell you
of the very high regard which we in the Senate have for Senator
Mon Wallgren, one of my closest and most valued friends.
Senator Wallgren served with me on the Truman Senate
Committee. He was Chairman of several of our most important sub-
committees, including particularly those on aircraft and on light
Hope form metals.
We always found him a tower of strength, and his advice
and counsel were a major contribution to the work of the Truman
Senate Committee and to the winning of the war.

Here in the Pacific Northwest you have been close to the

menace of the Japanese across the Pacific. You remember the terrible
days when the Japs were invading Alaska and when it was feared that
they might come here.
