ANNCR: Congress Speaks! A regular Tuesday night feature brought to you from
Washing ton by Columbia. Four days ago, on Saturday, March 3lst, the
President of the United States issued a proclamation naming this month,
April, "Cancer Control month" throughout the entire country. Mr. Roosevelt
did so first because it is a great concern of this nation that one out of
every 8 Americans is destined to die of cancer unless the disease is dis-
covered and treated. But the President was also carrying out an Act of
Congress when he set April aside as "Cancer Control Month", an Act that
was unanimously approved by the House and Senate six years ago. Tonight
"Congress Speaks" brings you two distinguished Americans: Harry S. Truman,
Vice President of the United States and Sam Rayburn, speaker of the House
of Representatives. They are here tonight as presiding officers of the
Senate and House to tell you why Congress is interested in cancer prevention;
and, as fellow Americans to tell you what the science of medicine has done
and can do to keep the disease out of your home. To introduce Vice President
Truman and Speaker Rayburn, here is Gunnar Back of CBS world News.

Mr. Truman, weive already heard one of the facts about cancer I'm sure
many Americans didn't know - that one out of every 8 Americans will die
of the disease because it:s not caught in time.
TRUMAN: Yes, that is a very startling fact - and a very serious one, too. Itm told
that cancer ranks second as the cause of all deaths for all ages in the United
States. It was facts like these, I remember, that caught our attention in
the Congress back in 1938, with the result that we unanimously passed a
joint resolution asking the President to make April national cancer control
month, which he has done every year since.
