Ee are here tonight to one of the greatest vietories of
American arma and to pay tribute to the Commander of our troopa at that
victory -- Andrew Jackeon, Major General, United States Benator, seventh
President of the United States; the man who really made the Democratic Party
the Perty that Thomas Jefferson visumlized. Andrew Jackson gave us
Demoeratic government, cezented the Regublic and firmly established the
principles on which the Democretic Party is founded. The setual control and
menagement of the Government by the people became a reality under the old
fire-brand from Tennessee.
Until Jeckson, Presidente had the advantages of birth, acuestion and
social standing. Jackson carved his career out of the wilderness of the West.
He brought home to the Atlentie seaboard the realization that e very
importent part of the netion aleo lay west of the Alleghenies. The migration
into Tonnessee, Kentucky, Ohio and the Northwest Territories had opened up
new landa and created new problema, even es the age-old ones were still
perplexing the Adana administration. Bank failures, unemployment and the farm
problema were just es lively and perplexing in the deys one hundred years ago
sa they are today.
There vas a general feeling weat of the Appelachian Mountains thet the
Weshington governnent sas a long way off and not particularly interested in
the general welfare of the country as e whole. Presidential esndidates were
picked at ceuquzes of the Representatives in Congrese. The people were not
considered. The Ere of Good Feeling under Monroe and John Quiney Adama mas
rather like the Ire of Prosperity under Harding, Cooliège and Hoover. The AN
