CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, MARCH 17, 1942

Mr. Chairman and Fellow Americans:
It is a great pleasure and privilege to be the guest this evening in
Charleston--the great port of the South--and to join with the members of
the Ancient Order of Hibernians and their vast legion of friends in cele-
brating the feast of St. Patrick.
The great organization of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, steeped in
tradition dating back to the year 1331 B.C. represents and typifies a race
whose very name echoos and re-echoes courage, loyalty and devotion to their
God and to their country.
Down through the ages we Irish have always fought for Freedom: (Yes, I
am proud to say that some of the blood of old Erin flows through my veins.)
The history of America--its fight for freedom, its growth to the country that
wo now know--and the history of the Irish in America--is one and the same,
And again today when American freedom is in peril, when America is being
attacked on overy sido==ir the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Carribean--when
American livos are being lost, American ships are being sunk, Americans of
Irish ancestry are fighting--2: thoy have always in the past, with honor and AN
with glory.
