SPEECH OF SENATOR HARRY S. TRUMAN AT THE DEDICATION OF THE LEGION MONUMENT IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI. SEPTEMBER 6, 1942 FOR RELEASE ON DELIVERY Some twenty-three years ago there assembled in this great city of St. Louis a group of veterans of the last World War. They were dedicated to the perpetuation of the spirit, valor, and patriotism which won that war. They were determined to keep alive in this country the ideals for which their com- rades had laid down their lives and for which they themselves had fought so valiantly. In their hearts was a consuming hatred for the forces of oppression which sought to crush the free peoples of the world. In their memory was an undying horror of war. It was their purpose to band together and begin again to fight - not with the weapons of war but with the weapons of peace - to bring home to every American, and by example, to every nation of the world the ideals and principles expressed by the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. From that meeting the American Legion was born, and today we commemorate that event. In former years the key note of the Annual State Convention of the Legion has been one of celebration. But today we cannot celebrate. This is a solemn hour - one of the most solemn hours in American history. It is time for serious talk. Conceived in the spirit of peace and the supremacy of free institutions everywhere, the American Legion has become a vital force in American life. Its more than one million members have carried the ideals of its founders into every American community. In the past the Legion has been the rallying ground for the development of the youth of America in the meaning of Democracy. It is now providing the leadership to defend that Democracy. A and
