SPEECH OF HONORABLE HARRY S. TRUMAN
TO BE DELIVERED OCTOBER 16
AT LOS ANGELES - SHRINE AUDITORIUM
Permit me to congratulate you people of Los Angeles
for the mighty fine job you have done in producing airplanes
and ships and many other items of war material. As Chairman
of the Truman Senate Committee, it was my duty and privilege
+
lrive for greater production and to check and re-check to
sure that our soldier's abtained the weapons they need to
be the enemy.
The backing of the public helped us get results.
Whon we found laggards, we never hesitated to force improve-
mei When we found obstacles, we went to work to remove them.
B° when we found a good job, we said so, and the Committee
u
himously, Democrats and Republicans alike, agreed that by
a i large a splendid job was done.
Our soldiers and sailors are getting what they need
t
win this war.
A good job was turned in here in California. We never
h. l to criticize you. Our efforts were confined to helping
:
l overcome some of your problems.
You helped to prove that the United States could tut-
p
oduse the world in war as well as in peace.
You helped to confound the doubting Thomases who
offed at the goals set by the President as fantastic.
Republican candidate quoted me. I now quote him. In
erring to the President's request for 50,000 planes to
otect America, he said:
"But what is the good of talking about
50,000 planes unless we know what we
are talking about and are prepared to
do something about it. * * Experts
estimate that it would take at least
four It is years very disturbing to accomplish to find this. the
