Mel, how are you?
ML:
Very good, Say I'm out here at this Airlie Meeting that I have
you know with my people and I just got an urgent call from Senator
Stennis and I want you to know how I handled it because he is going
to say something about this. On this Lavelle hearing, Senator
Hughes has demanded that A1 Haig appear to talk about his conver-
sations which he had in Vietnam.
HK:
I don't think he has ever met Lavalle.
ML:
Ah, when he was over there at briefings and when Abrams was
present in certain messages that he communicated. Now there
is no problem with this, but I just told--they wanted him up there
this afternoon and I just told them that was impossible.
HK:
That's right.
ML:
And that we would make him available in executive session of the
committee sometime next week but we could not do it now.
HK:
Well, he's on his way to Vietnam anyway.
ML:
Yeh, I understand that and but I thought you should loow that because --
HK:
Haig cannot testify about messages he sent back to the President
ML:
I don't think he needs to do that at all, I wouldn't- - he should just say
that but what they are going to do is use Haig's appearance on the
basis that he is appearing there on his confirmation--you see how
they
are getting around that. They are going to announce that A1 is there to
appear there on his promotion to four stars and we got to let him appear
because that's the way they' 11 announce it but I didn't want you taken
by surprise on that Henry and - when - - Al doesn't get back does hie till
Tuesday?
HK:
Wednesday. We better not make him available until the week after next.
ML:
I think that--let's--
HK:
I just don't see how he can get ready. I need him on Wed. and Thursday.
