TELCON Ron Ziegler/Secy Kissinger 3:40 p.m., June 4, 1974 Z: Hi, Henry. How did you do today? K: I think I did okay. Don't pay attention to that Star story. I didn't say Syria would get $100 million for economic aid. I said that figure is available for Syria among others in case certain conditions were met we would consider requests against that figure. Z: Yeah. That's the same point you made in the Leadership Meeting. K: Exactly. Z: You said there was available money which if relations developed that would be available for discussion. Right? K: Exactly. Z: Okay. Are you going to have your press conference Thursday? K: Yeah. Z: Okay. Well, you can clean that up then I guess. K: Right. I was asked today as I came out of the hearings about the President's trip. Z: No, I seen it -- it plays well. K: Good. Z: The reason I'm calling and I'm sorry to bother you on a minor point like this but poor Jerry Warren is almost in tears. We followed the guidance that klx we got from NSC and the State Department on restoration of relations with Syria today, which was basically a no comment and we have nothing to add to what Dr. Kissinger said in that regard as he left Syria. K: Yes. Z: Well, 45 minutes later the State Department issued a written statement saying that we were going to renew relations with Syria. Now it's a little minor thing that I can straighten out and this is really a pro forma call It makes the White House look like a fool.
