SUBJECT: Summary of Mail Trends
February 5 - 11, 1970 (including telegrams)
FOREIGN:
Vietnam: There was an increase in opposition to U.S. policy.
A few letters note plans for a demonstration in Washington, D.C.
on April 11 to urge victory in Vietnam and the restoration of prayer
in the schools. The March for Victory is being sponsored by the
American Council of Christian Churches (Reverend Carl McIntyre).
Middle East: Heavy increase in letters requesting the President to
support attempts to gain a negotiated peace between the Arab nations
and Israel, and to supply Israel with weapons.
Biafran Relief: Volume one fourth last week's total.

President's Press Conference 1-30-70: Light, favorable response.
President's Budget Message 2-2-70: Very light response with a few
writers against deferring the Federal pay raise until 1971.
Veto of HR 13111: Moderate increase in support of the President's
action. Critics cite the "waste" in the Anti- - Ballistic Missile System,
the Supersonic Transport, and defense spending generally.
White House Police Ceremonial Uniforms: Increase in criticism.
Tariff on Piano Imports: Heavy increase in petitions from United
Furniture Workers of America supporting tariff increase.
Freedom of Choice in Public Schools, Mid-Term Integration Plan:
The heaviest telegram count opposes bussing of students and disruption
of classes at mid-term. Overall volume same as last week.
Recomputation of Retired Military Pay: A heavy influx of form cards
and a moderate number of letters support retired military pay
equalization.
National Environmental Policy: Increase in letters in support. A few
writers believe overpopulation the greatest threat.
