pub MEMORANDUM (seture Delaw THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON March 26, 1971 MEMORANDUM TO: Staff Secretary FROM: Jeb S. Magruder and De Van Shumway SUBJECT: P 1550 - Editor Poll As requested, we have contacted a geographical cross-section of prominent newspaper editors to discuss with them their view of the current standing of the President and the Administration. Their observations, for the most part, are based on two sources of information: 1) informal polls run by their newspapers; and 2) discussions within their own constituency, primarily the business community. Although it is a less than "scientific" poll, it does have the advantage that those polled had no particular ax to grind and no vested interest in the conclusions they drew. The picture they paint is not particularly bright until you consider what they say about the future when the troops are substantially out of Vietnam and when the economy fully turns the corner. These men seem to anticipate that we will find a way out of our difficulties. Besides, they agree uniformly that the other side doesn't have anyone of stature to present to the American voter. This informal survey is the result of informal discussions with a dozen newspaper editors and executives. They were informal and personal and we should be careful to protect their confidential nature. It would not be good to jeopardize this relationship by passing quotes from these gentlemen around the White House. The narrative text of the interviews is at Tab A. Some general conclusions are at Tab B. A list of the interviewees is at Tab C.
