P HW TELEPHONE CALL RECOMMENDATION TO: Steward Alsop, Newsweek Columnist. RECOMMEND: Charles ColsonW Kissinger BACKGROUND: Mr. Alsop has been ill off and on for about a year and the doctors have not been able to diagnose it, although there is some suspicion that he has leukemia. As what is frankly described as a last-ditch effort, they are going to introduce a tuberculine virus into his body on Wednesday with the hope that it will induce a reaction which will fight off what he already has as well as the virus. The President has called Mr. Alsop during a prior hospitalization, but will probably want to call him again as he may not make it. TALKING POINTS: 1. Mr. Alsop enjoyed talking about his affliction earlier, but is not disposed to discussing it any longer. Any remarks the President may wish to make about it should probably be brief. 2. Mr. Alsop would probably most appreciate having his views solicited, particularly on domestic politics and international relations. Submission Date: June 5, 1972. NOTE: (Alsop will be at his home on Tuesday, June 6, but in the hospital and unavailable afterwards. ) his girl on day and this too address
