THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
September 19, 1972
THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
FROM:
KEN COLE
SUBJECT:
Telephone Conversation with Mayor Rizzo
Mayor Frank Rizzo called me early this past Friday
morning to report on a conversation with Mayor Alioto
the previous day.
Rizzo reports, as he mentioned in your office, that
Alioto said that unfortunately he could not endorse
you publicly as Rizzo had done. He then went on to
say that with the passage of revenue sharing and your
introduction and support of it, you had done more for
the cities than anyone he could think of. If he (Alioto)
is included in the signing ceremony for revenue sharing,
he can be counted on to say some good things about you
which he feels may be helpful. (He is currently on the
list of invitees.)
Alioto went on to tell Rizzo that he, Mayor Maier of
Milwaukee and Mayor Daley of Chicago are only going
through the motions as far as McGovern is concerned.
Publicly there are things they must do, but their
support of McGovern is only "skin deep".
