A bright student, he was prevented by financial considerations from attending college. After five discouraging years as a bank clerk in Kansas City, he returned to the farm. Truman was 33 when he entered the army during World War I. He served as a first lieutenant in the Field Artillery in France, then returned to marry Elizabeth Virginia Wallace and to open a haberdashery in Kansas City. The clothing store soon failed, but Truman refused to declare bankruptcy and eventually paid his creditors every penny even though it took ten years. 2) Truman was elected a judge of the Jackson County Court (an administrative position) in 1922. He was supported by the Pendergast machine, but his personal honestywas never questioned. He also attended law school at night from 1923-1925. He served as United States Senator from 1934 to 1944, heading the Senate War Investigating Committee which saved billions of dollars (some say $ $15 billion) by fighting waste and corruption and made Truman a national figure. 3) Margaret Truman Daniel's new book says that her father tried to dodge the Vice Presidential nomination in 1944 but accepted when Roosevelt persisted. He served as Vice Presi- dent less than four months, scarcely seeing President Roosevelt and receiving no information on the development of the atomic bomb or the unfolding difficulties with the Soviet Union. But these became his problems when, on April 12, 1945, he became President. His comment: "I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me. 11 4) Truman celebrated his first birthday in the White House -- his 61st -- on V-E Day In June of 1945 he witnessed the signing of the UN Charter. Soon afterward he made the crucial decision to use the atomic bomb against Japan.
