MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
FROM:
STEPHEN B. BULL
SUBJECT:
Status of Drug Offenders
Imprisoned in Foreign Countries
Julie asked me to prepare this memorandum, which is relative
to a conversation that you had with Mrs. Graham, regarding U.S.
citizens in prisons abroad as a result of drug offenses.
An article appearing in the major U.S. papers today reveals that
three young Americans, ranging in age from 23 to 30, were
sentenced to death by the Turkish Court on Friday, December 28.
The Court then commuted their sentences to life imprisonment.
U.S. State Department statistics that were subsequently released
indicate that there are 873 Americans imprisoned abroad on drug
charges. The sentences to the aforementioned three young Amer-
icans were believed to be the most severe ever handed down to
Americans.
Julie wanted you to be reminded that you and Mrs. Graham had
discussed a possible program whereby Bibles could be provided
to those in foreign prisons. Apparently this is a project that
Reverend Graham's organization would undertake.
All of the above information is provided on an FYI basis from Julie
as a follow up to instructions that you gave to her to obtain this
information.
