Suggestions for Remarks at the
National Association of Broadcasters Meeting
Electronic journalism has had a major impact on our language.
In its own day, the newspaper gave us phrases like "front-page story¹¹
or "hot off the presses. 11 But now a whole generation talks of "turning
on" and "tuning in. 11

The broadcasting industry plays a more important role in the
lives of many people than you may even realize. Our older citizens,
particularly who are often unable to move around as freely as they
once did, rely on TV for companionship and entertainment. A story
is told about one lady in California who celebrated her 100th birthday
and was presented with an airplane ticket to her childhood home in
New England and back. But she turned it down. "Man was not meant
to fly !" she said. "And besides, 11 she went on, "I'd rather just sit
here and watch my television set, like the Good Lord intended me to
do. 11
