Suggestions for Remarks - Welcome for President Pompidou
It was exactly one year ago this week that I visited Paris. That
journey was my first outside the United States after I became President.
Now, just a year later, President Pompidou visits Washington. And this
is his first trip outside Europe since he became President. These visits
testify to the warm friendship between our peoples.
President Pompidou comes from "the heart of France" in a patriotic
sense - - but he also comes originally from a geographic area which is
"the heart of France" - - the region known as Auvergne (Oh-vairn).
Auvergne was also the home area of another great Frenchman who is well
known to Americans, the Marquis de Lafayette. In fact, I checked on this
and found there are more than forty American towns named "Lafayette. 11
I don't know whether there are any named "Pompidou" as yet but there's
still plenty of time for that.
Lafayette is very much in the minds of Washingtonians these days.
Just a few months ago we unveiled a newly remodeled Lafayette Park across
the street from the White House. In that park is a statue of Lafayette, com-
memorating his contribution and that of his compatriots during our War of
Independence. That statue and the one of General Rochambeau who
commanded the French forces in America at that time will both be illu-
minated tonight as a gesture of respect for you and your people. The last
time this happened was 19 years ago when President Auriol visited Washington.
