Suggested Remarks for Salt Lake City
Utah is the 24th State I have visited in my 18 months as President.
And it is a State where I feel very much at home. Utah gave our ticket
the third highest percentage of any State in the country in the last elec-
tion. And it was a strong Republican State in other elections when I was
on the ticket - in 1952 and 1956 and 1960. I trust it will be a Republican
State again this fall, when you elect Larry Burton as your next United
States Senator.
I last visited here in September of 1968, but I have been in close
touch since that time. And I remember with particular gratitude the
outstanding contribution which the Mormon Tabernacle Choir made to
the ceremonies at the time of my Inauguration.
When I was here in 1968, I took as the theme for my speech the
words from the Book of Mormon about "obeying, honoring and sustain-
ing the law. " I can assure you that my Administration has been working
to achieve each one of these objectives.
It is especially good to be here on this great State holiday, Pioneer
Day. And I am happy that I am going to get a chance to see the famous
Pioneer Day Stampede. I've seen a lot of sporting events since I became
