CRIME BILL SIGNING 7/27/70 Draft by Pat Buchanan Cleared by Bill Timmons, Bud Krogh, Jim Keogh and John Ehrlichman Eighteen months ago the nation's capital was well on the way to becoming the crime capital of the nation. The number of violent crimes had almost tripled in eight years. To restore freedom from fear to the streets and the parks of Washington, I sent Congress -- more than a year ago -- the most comprehensive anti-crime package ever proposed for a single American 2 city. Last week Congress finally completed action on that package. During the months this legislation was before the Congress over 66, 000 serious crimes were committed in the District. This D.C. Crime Bill I am signing today is the only anti- 2 crime bill that I have requested that has been passed by the Ninety-First Congress. Still awaiting Congressional approval are our proposals to prevent use of the mails to send pandering advertisements and porno- graphic filth to children and teenagers.
