STATE OF THE UNION
Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, my colleagues in the Congress, our
distinguished guests and my fellow Americans:
I take a very special pleasure this evening in welcoming the
members of the 92nd Congress -- both those who are returning, and
those newly elected. [Albert ad lib]
This 92nd Congress has a chance to be recorded in history as
the greatest Congress since the Continental Congress met nearly two
centuries ago. This new Congress has a chance -- a chance few
Congresses have had - - to turn America in a new and dramatically
promising direction.
In the past year, we have been preparing the way for this.
The war in Vietnam at last is ending -- and ending in a way that
gives us a genuine chance to enjoy a full generation of peace.
Here at home, we are finally bringing under control the worst
inflation in over 20 years.
We have begun a massive campaign to restore and protect our
natural environment -- a campaign that will be expanded - to undo the
damage we have done, and to replenish this good earth.
We have begun to restore freedom from fear in America.
