The president left the Holiday Inn at 8:47. "About 10 Yippies
were across the street shouting "1,2,3,4, etc.'
Herb Klein with the president. They drove to apartment building
where Publisher John Knight lives, and emerged 75 minutes later. The
place is called The Blair House.
Coming out, he said, "I ate more than I have in a xxxx month
for breakfast that is."
Nixon stooned and chatted with repoters before he got in his car.
Said he was "particular y impressed' with the crowds. He said he had
alot of friends in the area and they must have all been out.
"I guess they just wanted to see another football fan," he said.
Then he recalled how he was stationed in Cttumwa, Ia., as a
Lt. J.G., during the early years of WII. He requ sted sea duty, he
said, but Yes sent to ttumwa instead, and found "a farm use in the
middle of a corn field. Seven months later, when he fnally got his
orders to go, t., sea, there was a naval air station there at the site
of the airnort where he anded today.
Nixon will spend the rest of the week-end at Camp David, Ziegler
told uson the lane. He is due back in at Andrews t about 4:35 p.m.
Before Nixon got on the plane, he shook hands end e changed small
talk with a long line (25 or 30) of local political figures and businessmen,
includ ng John Andrews, state committeeman.
