(Huebner) September 23, 1971 SUGGESTED REMARKS: PRESS RECEPTION IN ALASKA When Alaska celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1967, the centen- nial motto was "North to the Future. 11 Those words express the feeling I had as I came north to Alaska today for here one can truly look to the future with the sense of adventure and excitement. I understand the name "Alaska" comes from an Aleutian word meaning "great land. 11 When one looks at the map of Alaska, one real- izes that this is a great land in terms of size. Its territory is equal to one-sixth of our entire country. It spans four time zones. It is two and a half times the size of Texas and its general coastline is longer than that of the rest of the United States combined. But this is a great land in other senses as well. It is great in terms of beauty, in terms of natural resources, and most of all, in terms of the spirit of its people. Alaska is a young land. The average age of its people is 4-1/2 years below that of the entire country. But even more important, this is a place which is young in spirit. As long as that spirit lives, America's greatness will continue to grow. It is good to be in your largest city, Anchorage, which I understand was founded in 1914. That makes it just about as old as I am. And I must
