(Negroponte) NSC September 28, 1971 SUGGESTED REMARKS FOR POW FAMILY MEETING THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN I know that it is not a pleasure for any of us to be here tonight, but I am proud to be with the wives and children and parents who have shown the courage that each of you have shown in this long and savage ordeal. Tonight I want to be very brief and to the point. The point that I want to make is that ever since this administration has come to office it has done everything it possibly can to bring the Vietnam conflict to a rapid and honorable conclusion. And, as we have done this, nothing has been higher in our minds than seeking to assure the humane treatment of American servicemen in captivity and in taking every reasonable step to bring about the release of our Prisoners of War in the shortest possible time. It has been a source of the profoundest encouragement to me that those such as yourselves who have suffered and agonized the most have also stood most firmly behind your government in its search for an early peace. I have the deepest admiration for your patience and strength of purpose. You can be confident that your government a government which has already taken so many bold steps towards peace world-wide will continue to do everything possible to secure the early return of your men. I ask you to have trust in what we are doing.
