(Koch) DG March 18, 1972 THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN SUGGESTED REMARKS: CONCLUSION OF NEW YORK DRUG TRIP Seven weeks ago I established the Office for Drug Abuse Law Enforcement under the direction of Myles J. Ambrose. I have today seen the first fruits of the enforcement effort being conducted under Mr. Ambrose, and I am encouraged. I think the results I have seen here today confirm two things -- first, my belief that the war on drug trafficking must be coordinated at a single source - the new office under Mr. Ambrose -- and second, that it must rely on close cooperation between government at the Federal level, the State level, and the local level. We have coordination and we have cooperation, and we are going forward. * * * I said last June that drug abuse was public enemy number one. I determined that we would go after it with all the urgency that such a public enemy demands. This means a heavy commitment of time, energy and money. Here in New York State, as I have just witnessed today, the largest single grant of the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA) has allowed this State to set up 12 special courts to concentrate on wiping out the traffick in narcotics. Nationally, the Federal commitment to drug abuse prevention, treatment, rehabili- tation, and law enforcement will come to $475 million this fiscal year
