STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT
Pat Gray is an able, honest, and dedicated American.
Because I asked my counsel, John Dean, to conduct a thorough

investigation of alleged involvment in the Watergate episode, Pat Gray
was asked to make FBI reports available to Mr. Dean. His compliance

with this request was enough to permit political partisans to splash

Mr. Gray with innuendo and suspicion, and thereby seriously tarnish and

his fine record as Acting Director and promising future at the Bureau.

I am told that Mr. Gray's nomination will never be confirmed by
the Senate. Mr. Gray has asked that I withdraw his nomination. In
my arriding

fairness to Mr. Gray, and out of practical concern for the conduct of

the vitally important business of the Bureau, I have regretfully agreed
to withdraw Mr. Gray's nomination.
