With 99% of votes in, RN has 357, 000 or 87% to 36, 000 or 9% for
Ashbrook and 17, 000 or 4% for McCloskey.
Wallace rolled up 511, 000 (42%) to 229, 000 for HHH (18%) and Jackson,
166, 424 (14%). Muskie got 109, 000 (10%) and Lindsay edged McGovern
80, 000 to 74,000 for 6% Chisholm received 44, 000 for 4%.
The antibusing amendment had 1, 096, 000 for and 384, 000 against --
74% in favor. The vote on equal education was 1,059,000 for and
288, 000 against -- 79% in favor. School prayer picked up 1, 125, 000
yes votes and 293, 000 against -- 79% in favor.
TV SPECIALS
Chancellor opened NBC's 30-min. special noting that Fla. voted
Wallace and RN to the top of their lists, but there were lots of surprises.
(Over film of Wallace hedqtrs) Chancellor said the Gov. and supporters
ought to be happy. They are, said NBC's Mackin, they're "elated. 11
Wallace's showing was called "smashing;" HHH's "something of a
surprise;" Jackson's a "surprise, 11 and Muskie, "perhaps the former
front-runner, 11 got only 9% It was pointed out JVL spent more time
and money then most others, but didn't do SO well. Chancellor called
Muskie's showing "the most interesting story. 11 Brinkley said it looks
like his "bandwagon lost some wheels and some trombones. It got
bogged down. 11 He didn't do very well. Awaiting Wallace's speech,
Chancellor noted "On Wisc. 11 as the theme music -- "making libs
tremble.' 11
Chancellor said HHH's candidacy was improved and HHH on film
said he thinks he did "very good" considering large field and will
meet Wallace head-on in W. Va. where there won't be SO many other
candidates. HHH cited his objective in Fla. was one of a testing
ground for the paramount issues and his own candidacy. Chancellor
said he "can feel pretty good, 11 and Brinkley noted HHH came in a good
second, ahead of the other natl. Dems. Chancellor pointed out HHH
hadn't been as liberal, and Brinkley pointed out the Sen. 's "sort of"
stance against busing. Perkins, at HHH hdqtrs, said the Sen. was
"elated" and quick to point out that those who fared well in NH hadn't done
SO in Fla. Perkins, noting HHH's claims of being the oldest candidate,
said he still has the old verve and energy - that HHH's Fla. organization
