NEWS SUMMARY March 22, 1972 THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN (Tuesday nets, wires, mags) -- ABC/NBC led with the big question of the Ill. primary -- can Muskie repolish his "tarnished image. 11 -- CBS led with, and NBC reported on, Organized Labor's summit to decide whether to walk off the Pay Bd, in what Cronkite calls the "most serious challenge yet" to RN's economic control programs. ABC/CBS carry film (NBC reports) of RN signing legislation authorizing the Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention. Turkish PM Erim tells RN his gov't is "totally committed" to stamping out opium cultivation. -- All nets note the Sup. Court struck down the one-year residency requirement for voting. All nets note Communist mortar attacks on Phnom Penh leave 75 dead, 100 wounded, and wide damage. SG Steinfeld on all nets says TV violence does affect some individuals and calls for a cooperative effort by all segments of society to solve the problem. With 40% of the precincts reporting Muskie wins the "popularity 63% contest¹ with 63% to McCarthy's 37%; Simm's neck-and-neck 37% with Walker for the gubernatorial nomination and Hanrahan appeared to be whipping Daley's choice.
