THE
PRESIDENT
HAS
SEEN
In both Sat. and Sunday papers and networks, VN dominates. On
Sat. it was the fall of Loc Ninh and Laird's warning that bombing will
continue til NVA withdraws and his charge that NVA offensive definitely
violates the '68 understanding. News in Sunday media on VN featured
siege of An Loc; Abrams' assessment that all-out offensive every-
thing but the kitchen sink was underway; the elite Saigon troops
dispatched North on Hwy 13 and the Ziegler statements that (1) options
are open but there' 11 be no increased use of US ground combat troops
and (2) NVN peace feelers are diversionary. Other prominent Sunday
coverage to slowing of NVA offensive in Quang Tri, the continued
heavy fighting around An Loc and the attacks on some US installations.
6 GIs killed and 25 wounded at Cam Rahn. 24 listed dead or missing
in plane losses
US also confirmed a B-52 was hit by a SAM for the
first time but it landed safely. NVA claims one was downed the third.
(Marcus Raskin of Inst. for Policy Studies had a talk with Nguyen Vy of
Hanoi's Paris delegation and reports NVA troops have been ordered to
reopen fire on US troops.)
Other major attention on Sat. given to the hijack; economic
statistics; LBJ's hospitalization; Meany's bet that RN would be re-
elected as of now; Joey Gallo's murder; the heroin hotline (p. 1 Sun
and Times) and ITT. Sunday stories besides VN: CBS led both Sun.
and Sat. with search for hijacker and subsequent capture of a
suspect who is a VN vet and active Mormon; the assassination of
Zanzibar's chief; and revelation that LBJ had a serious heart attack
with 80% chance of recovery. He is showing "definite signs of im-
provement. 11

Republican Assembly endorsed RN.
Muskie's fortunes seen perhaps
irreversibly on decline in National Observer poll of likely delegates.
James Byrnes, former S. C. gov., Supreme Court Justice, Secy.
of State under HST and FDR's "Assistant Pres. died. RN ordered
the WH flag to half mast in tribute. NBC noted RN's praise: "No man
in US history has held so many positions of responsibility in all branches
of our government with such distinction. 11
