April 12, 1972
(Tuesday Nets, Wires, Mags, Columns)
THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
The Major Stories of the day:
All nets again lead with VN developments with situation seen as
stabilized to mildly hopeful for ARVN. Gen. Hollingsworth on
2 nets has high praise for ARVN and confidently talks of routing
the NVA.
Late Tuesday Saigon claims it repulsed the first
major NVA thrust of the offensive to come along the Cambodian
border approaching the Delta.
Some controversy over what
"dynamic defense" means as US combat troops beef up Phu Bai
near threatened Hue.
Nets only noted briefly Justice's Peterson acknowledging US Atty
Steward acted improperly tho not criminally in the San Diego
Campaign spending investigation. But NBC made much of Sam
Ervin's hard line: Either Peter Flanigan comes to Hill or Sam
opposes Kleindienst.
The Veep sharply criticizes "anti-intellectual Yahooism" on
campuses and among academic societies. Film on 2 nets.
The building criticism over tax returns peaked on nets with
Brinkley ripping into the complex forms and unfair system as
he was accompanied by the song "Ain't We Got Fun. 11 Rough.
And ABC had a feature on the virtual impossibility for the average
guy of accurately filling out the forms.
LBJ has returned to Texas -- Brooke General Hosp for further
treatment.
Agreement has been reached on the pension dispute which triggered
the baseball strike but settlement is held up by failure to agree on
compensation for the missed games. Anyway, situation looks
brighter.
